Latham Square is one of the most prominent intersections in Oakland, CA and functions as the gateway to the emerging uptown neighborhood. Despite its prime location, Latham Square is dominated by automobile traffic. This pilot plaza seeks to build on Latham Square's significance by creating an enhanced pedestrian space that serves as a convenient spot for lunch, a central gathering place as well as a platform for additional cultural programming.
The design incorporates temporary plantings to compliment the historic intersection as well as reused building materials salvaged from the City of Oakland corporation yard. Materials include surplus street signs, old tree grates and vintage lamp post bases.
